Roles in Spaces

Roles determine what people can see and do in Spaces. There are administrative roles designed for people responsible for managing accounts and settings, and non-admin roles that let people work in Spaces and access key features of the application.

Role Types Overview

Spaces has two types of roles that work together to control access and permissions:

Global Roles: Apply across your entire organization and define org-level permissions.

Scoped Roles: Apply to specific contexts (organizations, spaces, or channels). Users can have different scoped roles in different contexts (e.g., Owner in one space, Guest in another).

Primary Roles

Organization Owner

A Spaces org can have one or many Organization Owners (Org Owners). These individuals can invite members, manage security settings, and perform general administrative tasks.

Member

Most of your team will fall into this role. Members have access to use features of Spaces, but do not have high-level administrative permissions.

Guest

A Guest User is someone who does not work for your organization, but you want to invite them into your org as a member with limited rights and access. A Guest user does not have to have an existing Spaces account to be invited. Note that Guests authenticate according to your organization's security policies, and their permissions are based on your configurations.

Connected User

This is a user that joins your org via a Connected Space.

Space Roles

Space Owner

Space Owners have full control over the space they are assigned to. This includes the ability to archive the space, add members to the space, handle space-specific access requests, and more.

Space Administrator

A Space Administrator has all the same rights as the Space Owner, except the ability to archive the space.

Channel Roles

Channel Owner

Channel Owners have full administrative control over the channel they are assigned to. This includes adding members, updating the channel name, archiving the channel, and more.

Channel Administrator

A Channel Administrator has all the same rights as the Channel Owner, except the ability to archive the channel.

Moderator

Moderators can manage channel memberships. This includes adding or removing members, assigning channel roles, and handling access requests, but they cannot update channel settings or archive the channel.
